Octopus....

Any here ever tried a species tank with these cool cephelapods? Ive been reading alot on them latley and am thinking of getting a small one for a 10 or 12 gal. Would get a lil blue ring if they werent so deadly... . I was at the Monterey Bay with my professor and got a small behind the scenes look at thier octopus tanks (the small ones, not the giant one) and got to feed on of them. They can unscrew a soda bottle to get food inside! Anyone with personal experience or anything would be mucho appreciated.

 

well...u need to make sure ur tank is super super super super...(ten years later) super secure they r freaking crazy escape artists...im starting one with my school and i have heard of them leaving the tank and walking around lol...the blue ring is very nice...especially for a touch tank...JK!!!! dont touch that little mofo he will bite u and u will die...well...thats it...

 

My friends dad had one a while back (only for like 3months) and when it saw you with food (could spot the "food bag" from across the room) i would start to climb out of the tank! thats how it died..by escaping. The eclipse sysms have a very well fitiing hood and can accomadate saltwater outta the box....I am running a hex 5 right now with a perc, anemone,zoo's and shrooms! anywho...i see this is a forign subject to most so i think i will be the pioneer into this relm for 3reefers....unless someone here has had one.... ;D

 

I've kept em at work, and had several friends (one still does) keep octo's. Most opt for the bicintus (sp?) as they're longer lived then most and hardy as all get out. Octos are horribale shippers though, so buy locally and look for CB if available. Our local octo's around here are insanly hardy. No heater, no chiller, just keep em in a cooler room.

not in a 12 gallon dude i had a friend of mine that kept a small one for about 3 months and then gave it back because it tore his tank apart. you need at least a 75or bigger... thats my experience on them.

Not to be rude but ur friend must of put one in a display with other creatures. My friend that gave me one (got it this evening) has had it in a 4 gallon tank for just under a year...he has kept this "kind" for over 2. He used to be head aquarist of Marine world in Vallejo Ca...This guy/gal came frome bali and is presumed venomous after it QUICKLY subdued a fu man chu lion in a nocturnal display...also consumed a type of true sting ray and a few other nasty nocturnal critters before given up for adoption to me. Any who this stunningly cunning critter is in quarentine in a 3 gal. before foing into a 10 cube in a few weeks. he is very fast and is currently probing for an escaoe route...this is the only pic i could manage...

 

He is unidetified by two marine biologists...he is a red color when he sees me....before that he is a baby blue with green spots.....he is about 6" in diameter not including his abnormally long 2 rear tentacles wich are the identifying features of a couple species...ill get a good pic when he settles in....

 

Well.....after 3 days of research no luck.....this guy is a light blue with almost flourecent green spots (not rings) and they give way to an overall deep red with a big white stripe on the "head" when hes pist....he can produce appendages for different textues VERY well....sone about 1/2"....he's from bali.....and has began to really streach about 8" in diameter not including the 2 longer rear tentecales.....Ill get pics somteime but he scrunches up and darkens or darts in a hole whe i get in close enought to take a pic....oh ya...he atea large turbo and some fresh unshelled mussel.....
