    Hello Friends,

    I picked up an Odyssea 480 watt light (2 - 175 watt, 2 - 65 watt actinic).

I read some reviews on the fixture and they were 50/50 but that is not why I am here. I would like to know first off if anyone has this setup, how do you remove this style halide bulb? Also, I know there are a few different levels of bulbs for the halide as far as how many "K's" are concerned and tint.

I have a 50 gallon reef with soft corals and maroon clowns. Thank you all very much.

First off, welcome to 3reef. I have never used halides, so I am not sure how to remove the bulb. I'm sure when people start waking up there will be someone who knows. As far as the kelvin rating (K) goes, 6700 is fairly yellow and is good for maximizing coral growth. The higher ratings 10K, 14K, 20K go from very white on the low end to blue on the upper end. These higher ratings will improve the color of your corals. If it was my light, I would probably go with 10K halides and the bluest actinic bulbs I could find.

Thank you very much for the information. Halide lighting is new to me and I dont want to break the fixture to remove the bulb. Unfortunetly there was no manual with the fixture.

I like your advice on the color spectrum as to which is better for my soft coral. I eventually want to get into hard corals and clams so thats why I went with halide over my T-5 setup.

if its and hqi bulb, you have to move it to one side and pull down. its spring loaded. make sure you use a paper towel or something so you dont get body oils on the bulb. also if you are using it for reefing i prefer 10K - 14K. depends on how fast you want growth.

    Thank you, that worked!!

Thank you also for the bulb advice.

Based on the fact that this is what they call a double ended bulb, can any manufacturer of 175 watt bulbs work?

Yes, as long it's DE. I don't see any 175watt DE on marinedepot for some reason.

get a nice bulb since you were able to save on the fixture. it is amazing the difference in bulb quality out there...

I love my Ushios, even more then the Phoenix bulbs I have. 14k Ushios.... nice. :) A good bulb saves you in the long run, cheap bulbs lose color quickly and have to be replaced more often, otherwise they begin growing algae like no one's business.

Thank you for the bulb advice. I will look into the Ushios.

Can't seem to find a good brand that carries 175 watt DE bulbs in the 14k
