Well I will say that after hearing all the bad things about this protein skimmer, I am pretty impressed with what I got for 40 bucks.

Alot can be said about letting a skimmer "break-in". My Skimmer I heard lots of bad things about it. I even started to beleave alot of it without giving the skimmer a shot. I setup my tank, setup my skimmer and started to test it. I noticed that it was infact giving me alot of trouble with overflowing. So I decided to turn it off and think about buying a new one. I then started reading about breaking them in.

Boy oh boy does that make a world of difference. I ran my skimmer for 4 days without even trying to get skimm from it. I just let it run, After the 4th day I then set it so I would start seeing the bubbles on the very bottom of the collection cup. After 24 hours I got a nice brown/slight green color skimm from my skimmer and have had 0 issues with it overflowing. I think it all had to do with just letting it run for the couple of days as I did.

So goes to show that yes breaking in a skimmer and allowing it to have time to run makes a world of difference.

Unfortunately, this problem doesn't go away.

I have been running this skimmer for the past six months too and have had no problem with flooding. I should say that it does require some caressing when it is not broken in. But it never really skimmed that much stuff. I think I had it setup wrong at first since it does not come with instructions or tech support. Also, there was no flow adjuster with the PH so I had to construct a DIY controller--that was key in preventing flooding.

Recently, I broke the impeller shaft on the pump. I had a ton of extra PH's in the garage and did not want to buy a new one specifically for this purpose. I put the prop off of the old impeller shaft onto a different shaft and used a different motor also. Now, instead of a 250gph PH I am using a 160gph PH. I have an air pump running air to the PH instead of relying on suction and I placed a short section of tubing inside the skimmer connected to the inlet. This tube redirects flow around the inside perimeter of the chamber. When I fired it back up, it skimmed immediately! The vortex inside the chamber is now much more complete and it looks like a skimmer is supposed to.

    Here's hoping it doesn't flood!

Honestly my friend has a Seaclown, umm Seaclone. It pulls out gunk.. I have an AquaC.. been running 4 days, and it's skimming out gunk. I think what you run into is the more you pay.. the more efficient.. my buddy adjusts the Seaclone all the time.. my Remora.. there's no fiddling. You get what you pay for imo.

No question! However, handiness and willingness can go a long way toward mitigating the difference.

Things are going well still. The skimmer has been filling the cup every 2 days. The skimmate is the color of caramel and is wet. And the tank has lost the greenish hue it had developed while the skimmer was down. I am so happy. When I finally fixed that thing I felt like I had solved a Rubik's cube.

Yeah mine does the exact same thing, really dark brown liquid. I am sure it will start to get worse when I load down the tank.
