I am with JohnMaloney, but I am afraid it will eventually follow the gulf stream around Florida. The Key's are one of my most visited dive spots, and it will be a dead zone here soon. I hate the news everyday. Tonight they said that it could be August before it is 100% stopped.

Black raven also makes a good point. It seems to me that the oil industry is not doing much to mitigate the problem. They are still just guarding their bottom line. Despite threats from Salazar the feds aren't doing much either, other then talking. You would think that after the time that has elapsed someone should be fined everyday that a drop of oil comes out of that pipe. Once there is some financial repercussions maybe someone would work a little faster. Just one persons opinion.

nice someone who has been diving in the Keys! It is hard to explain the amount of life that lives on say just one mile of reef isn't it?

Has any of you heard what happened with a 3rd attempt to shut it down?
I was shortly catching the news today on on of my local channels while doing something else, and overheard they were going to attempt something else. Another "operation BS" plan.

Even though they would not do much with the plumes, I'm still interested in knowing what happened with Kevin Costner machines? Were they the real deal or just more BS?

I do agree with most everyone opinions on shutting down off-shore drilling.... it's just way too dangerous... way too much risk of something going wrong and ruining the sea and the vast life in it.

I also, like reefmonkey dreamed to dive in the FL Keys and see "IT" with my own eyes.... all the beauty and all mother Nature's wisdom..... I don't want all that hard work that took thousands of years to go away along with the vast specialized wildlife.... and the possibility of this happening makes me very, very sad.

Let's just hope for our children sake and the children of our children that a solution is found. I doubt they can revert the damage, but at least stop it and give nature a chance.

EDIT: Shutting down may be radical and not viable in the long run, based on how badly we depend on oil, if shutting it down is not an option, then MAJOR FINES SHOULD BE MADE LEFT AND RIGHT!!! I can't help to feel to feel hypocritical with this statement... but unfortunately we need oil and tons of it! Oil companies MUST have at least 20 security measures to counter something like this BY LAW! And also, SHAME on our government for pretending they care about this more than anything else.... when we know it's a popularity contest with politicians.... and money talks.... I'm not sure where I'm heading with this comment... part of my rant is due to the prior experience with corruption in my home country, Argentina, but I think the lack of action of our government, today, when billion dollar companies are involved are way too much like what pushed me away from Argentina and into the United States of North America.

They need to retroactively change the law to allow for the government to seize all income for each day oil is spilled. As in, all income from the company for each day oil is being spilled goes to the government and gets directed towards containment and cleanup. Or a shutdown of US operations and seizure of assets. Or a fine that's greater than one day of profits. Just something that's significant to a corporation's operations.

You really do need to consider them as the law does when coming up with punishments: a person without any morals, emotions or boundaries, and ruthless efficiency at achieving a single goal.

And if you think the damage is bad now - just wait until hurricane season, and half of the states on the gulf have 10+ miles inland covered in a sheet of oil.

Slightly different one this time. They're cutting off a piece of the riser and capping over that small section where they cut, rather than dropping a giant box over the whole riser.

John, did you see the link that was posted earlier?
    Check it out here:

All of these stuff have been tried already and at 200 ft of dept without success. I believe this will also take 8 or 9 months to be stopped. Even with all the public pressure.

makes sense, if pressure was a problem before a smaller more powerful jet should make it easier. I have no clue really I don't have an engineering background but each idea sounds crazier than the last. I will be rooting for them, hopefully it works out.

eh...I have been youtubing and this is what I bumped into that I liked:

LA wildlife - fisherman in 2006 discussing erosion of wetlands and marshes etc...

    YouTube - Louisiana Wildlife

skip ahead to 1:30 - 2008 interview with fisherman who talks about LA marsh and a short boat ride in the video

YouTube - God Made This Place with a Fisherman in Mind

and a different conversation about the exact marsh:

YouTube - Billy Nungesser: Twenty-four miles of Plaquemines Parish is destroyed. Everything in it is dead

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxQlqYNcZaE&feature=related

la wetland loss - 2010 another fisherman talking about the wetlands, mostly the same stories the others had.

YouTube - The Untold Story - Louisiana Wetlands Loss

your right magnus, that is pretty telling. I felt like re-posting it here:
