I was willing to cut BP some slack, but the more that comes out, the more it is apperant they deserve none. I felt that discussion has been thouroughly gone over here.

Yet we have mountain ranges of evidence that man is greedy and man will always try to get something for nothing. Corners will always be cut. But even if we could correct our evil ways, accidents will still happen in hazardous endeavors. We will continue to consume resources as long as resources are available.... and bad things will continue to happen as a consequence. Many accidents have happened not out of malice, but just plain old stupidity. No way to fix that.

These are the prices we pay to live the lives we have. Some will gain, some will lose. And yes it really sucks for those that lose. I'm not heartless. This is really bad, but it is what it is.

Did anybody check the news today? Apparently BP is lowering a cap on the well today. They've been spending the past couple days cutting off the broken section and finally got that done today. But the cut wasn't straight so they don't know if they cap will fit properly. Hopefully the cap fits and works and stops the spill, otherwise I heard it won't be until Aug that their backup plan will work.

does anyone know... once this is fixed will it be monitored?

For example, if it gets capped and stops the leak, other wells drilled, whatever, is anyone going to know if in, say, ten years the cap is leaking bc, for example, the cut wasn't straight or something?

Or is it a situation of once it's fixed, never think of it again?

Unfortuneatly the last sentence is the most true and accurate imho. We are a nation that relaxes, reacts to crisis, then relaxes again. Time makes us passive and we seem to forget easily. 911 is a good example of that because look at how easily Faisal Shazhad, a man on the no fly list, boarded that plane recently. All because of "security lapses".

I thought this was not a "cap", but another attempt of placing a suction on top of the well to draw off the leaking oil. Even then I thought it was not going to get 100% of the oil. Let's hope it works.

Look at the other side of that coin too, though - they only caught him at the airport because of security improvements made in reaction to the Christmas bomber, or he would have been off the tarmac.
