I have some sand left over from when I did my refuguim a while back, I was wondering if it would hurt anything by putting the sand in my DT with the crushed coral that been in there since I set up the tank over 2 years ago, or would this create problems?

I've read in other threads that this will cause problems. My current substrate is just CC.

Hi, it will not create any "real" problem, just a minor cycle, depending on how much you add at one time. adding live bacteria after you put the sand in will ease the minor cycle. You will not see the sand though as it will filter down through the crushed coral.

What kind of problems would it cause? I have some cc on the bottom of a tank that i covered with sand and I haven't seen any issues yet.

I have no experience with it, but what I read was that in the long run the sand will all collect at the bottom and the cc on top and that, for some reason I don't remember, will interfere with the different bacteria at the different levels causing, after time, nitrate hotspots.

I am not saying that is accurate nor inaccurate. Just what I read here in a thread once.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I would love to get rid of the CC but I don't want to lose anything from having to cycle again so I figured I would try to add sandy spots in areas.

One of my tanks is full of cc and it's got too much in it to try to remove it, if I would have done my homework when I bought that tank (came with cc) I would have removed it right away. death to cc!

If you replace your crushed coral a little section at a time, you should not have a cycle and the bacteria and critters will populate the new substrate between section replacements.

'Use a hose to syphon out the cc and then add the sand in that spot. If you do it over time it shouldnt be much of an issue. BTW, I'm talking over a few weeks not a few hours or days.
