I think that I'm the only one here who doesn't recommend rinsing the sand :) That fine sediment is really good for your tank and if you don't mind waiting a few days for the silt to settle, don't rinse it.

The disclaimer that it's not for aquarium use is just an example of CYA. They don't want to get sued if somebody has a problem with their tanks because of the sand :)

Well, I rinsed out my sand and I still had cloudy water for 2 days, so I'm sure I got plenty of the silt even though I rinsed it. And I agree about the not for aquarium use wording. If it isn't packaged and sold in a pet store for an extreme markup then from a business standpoint they have to say that.

All the great remarks on this board is enough for me to know its safe.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned about it, but I've got a couple of days before "final" setup. Eventually little friends will grow on it and pull it out of solution. It's just more surface area. I'm not out of control, but am a little bit of a neat freak around the tanks and this is really silty stuff.

I just put the sand in with no washing, and it was so cloudy for almost 2 weeks....I took it out and started over. :-[

That was with a skimmer and .5 micron pad.

So, you think maybe I should rinse the Southdown? Only thing, we have well water with high iron and who knows what else. I use Culligan for all my tanks though.
Mayeb just a quick rinse would cut down a lot though? Ideas?

Hey, go easy on that Tropical sand. Just saw on the news a story about another giant sinkhole in Florida. Now we know where they got all that sand. Before we know it the whole state will just sink away.

    Just kidding ...

    Cheers,
    Ray

    Scooter,

Perhaps you can rinse the stuff real good with the well water, and the for a final rinse, use the culligan...just a thought.... :)
