I just recently realized that if I were to loose power, my sump would majorly overflow! so I got a new one :)
If anyone is interested, Home Depot (at least my local one) has 30 gallon heavy duty tubs mis-marked as a smaller tub AND marked on sale for $11. hehe i bought three ;)

Congrats, good catch on the mis-marked tubs and that you were in flood danger.

good deal dingo! I always make sure I have a Air hole at the top of the u-pipe going into the top of the tank from your main return pump.. usally stops any siphon right away due to power outage.

    thanks :)
i do have one in the return but after it breaks siphon, the drain pipe (return to sump) still goes until the water level is pretty low. I attribute it to the REALLY crappy engineering of marineland standpipes :(

Wrong priced items - its great when that happens - its rare, but all the more enjoyable for that fact when you benefit from it IMHE

what you doing with the other 2 tubs?

and why would you have had a flood using original one?

Swing check valves can help with power failures and overflows.

I bought one for my dad's future upgraded sump... and another just for RODI water storage. it is a great deal so i might go buy another tomorrow! you never know when you can use an extra 30g container (especially for just $11) ;)

Marineland over here in the U.S. has terrible engineering on their internal overflow standpipes, so my old 10g sump (usually kept at approx 7g) would overflow between the .5g supplied from my refugium and the 4g supplied from my DT.

i could have lowered the water level to approx 5g in my sump but this would cause my skimmer to underperform, so i just decided a larger sump would be better

IMPO if you set your sump up correctly there is no need for these. I would not recommend ever using a check valve in your system. It will eventually fail and flood you out. Just set the sump up correctly in the first place
