I have read a lot of old thread on the mud verses sand theory, but most of them are from the 2004, 2005 era. I just wanted to know if there was any new light on the subject or anything else someone has used that will work. This is an expensive decision to make and I would like to have all the information I could.

It really depends on what you want your fuge for.If your fuge is for pods & cheato no mud or sand is needed. If your wanting to grow caulerpa/algae,then plain sand would do(maybe some laterite or cat litter). If your wanting sea grasses then a mix of sand, mud, laterite, and (from what Iv'e read) mag calcite.

This is still a new field,so there isn't any definite answers.
I think there is a study going on,to see what/how/how much substraits effect water quality. On Marine Depot,in Anthony's forum.

New field? Refugiums have been around for 20 years or more. What is new is that people are using them more now than ever which means that opinions about and methtods of their use are getting more complicated than they need to be :)

I picked up LS today and everything else I needed to finish the sump/fuge. It is running with light on but is just recirculation the water from one end to the other. After things settle then I will pipe it to the display tank.....I'm so excited, my first DIY and I think it came out pretty good. Thanks again for the advice from everyone!;D
