i am going to be setting up a 300gal or bigger tank. im trying to get all my ducks in a row, and i wanted to know how any one else has done it by switching everything over to a bigger tank. do i just pull everything out and put it in tubs after the new tank has been set up for about a month running with nothing in it and then just put everything in the new tank or do i have to acclimate them. i want to do this right and have everything set up so theres no problems. thanks guys:eek:

hi ranger 2806 , thats a sizeable upgrade, never had this problem myself, wish I did to be honest

Can you have both set ups running at same time, as it would be good to cycle the new tank before adding your present stock (IMO)

if I did have this problem, this is what I would do
I would use some of the rock, sand, etc from my present set up to seed the new set up
and at water change time, use some of the SW I was going to throw out to also help with the maturation process of the new tank

IMO - trying to put the contents of your 75 into the 300 in an uncylced state, would mean to much newness, of rock, sand, water, equipement was all coming on line at once
and may spell problems for your existing stock

    thats just my thoughts

    Steve

A common method is to transfer the rock and as much of the sand as possible. You can even you as much of the old water as possible. Then add the animals back in. As long as you keep the rock wet you should get little or no die off, and thus no or at the most minimal cycle. I wouldn't add anything new for a few weeks afterwards, but you should be ok.

the rock contains most of the bacteria so i just move every thing over, and usually only end up with a small cycle.

i would advise you to be careful if the tank is older, waste can build up in the sand, i would rinse the sand in a bucket of saltwater.

yes i will have both up and running at the same time durring the change over. i plan on having my new tank running for a week or two and i will put all of my water change water in there and as well as most of the live rock just no fish or real sensitive corals in there right away. it will be a while but i will post picks of everything once i get it.
