I recently placed my 1st online order for LR due to the great prices vs my LFS. There was a mistake with the shipping and my LR arrived 4 days after it was packaged. Is it going to be ok or did I just basically buy Base Rock due to die off??? Right now I"ve got a box with 30lbs of smelly BAli Alor:cry:

Well, it's probably base rock now. Don't worry about it, at least you didn't buy fish or corals. You most likely would have had to cycle it anyways. I bought pre-cured rock from a lfs and brought it home and had it in the tank within 40 min. I still had a cycle, although it was a small one.

I'm fairly new to the hobby, and did not cycle my first batch of LR as I bought it from my LFS and at the time my tank was new. When I cycle this new LR, will any of the inhabitants "come back to life" ie coralline and copepods etc.?? Basically, what is the difference from what I currently have vs what is laying in a dry shelf at a LFS for $2.50/lb....I'm obviously distraught over this.

Also, when I cycle can I just fill a large plastic tub with saltwater and a powerhead for 2 weeks and let it roll??

no its not base rock, the bacteria is still alive and so its still live rock, you just might have more of the hitch hikers die.

I very highly doubt that your rock is dead after only 4 days in transit. When they ship from where its collected to the warehouse do you think that they put it in water? I've had LR that arrived in a cardboard box with somewhat moist/dry newspaper. The bacterias and other organisms that make rock live are on the INSIDE of the rock, not so much on the outside. Now, i wouldnt doubt that there is dieoff from the stuff on the outside of the rock. that will process in the cycle, pick off the big stuff and roll on.

As long as it is wrapped in wet or damp newspaper you are fine. My neighbor bought a box of liverock from our LFS that had been there at least 2 weeks and when we were checking it out, out popped a brittle star alive and well.

As long as the rock is wet its still live. Doesn't hold true for all the hitch hikers, which sucks, but hey at least its not a total loss.
