Yeah.... the darn thing is driving me nuts. I have an absolute steady water level. At 6 inches it was overflowing regardless of gate valve position. I raised it to 5 1/2 water depth and it was working for a while and now it isn't producing enough bubbles regardless of gate valve position.

    Frustrating. :-/

Let's see if we can break this down:

3 x Red Dragon II Pumps with Digital Controller $1600 per pump = 4800 alone
the bearings run a few hundred each
    all metal is titanium

I can see how it cost them half the retail price just to build it. Don't forget, you are also paying for the time royal exclusive spent designing and troubleshooting the skimmer. I am not justifying the price, just trying to show how it isn't as overpriced as many assume it is. I would still never buy it unless I had a massive tank.

Could the gate valve have something obstructing it?

For that price, the skimmer would have to do my laundry, bake bread, vacuum the floors plus provide daycare for the kids.

Price the rest of the equipment that would be needed to warrant this skimmer and the price won't seem that huge. Salt alone would cost at least $1,500 just to mix up the first batch of water!
