    Hello;
    I've had a pair of Clownfish,perculas for over 6 years. The larger of the two was dead in the tank this morning. The smaller one is swimming up and down the back wall and won't eat.
    Can I get another clown and add it to the tank.....will they pair up?
    The other two were such a cute couple. Is this how old Clowns die...fine one day and then dead the next.
    I would hate to lose my other one...I get a little attached to my fish and hate to lose any.
    Thanks for any help

    Are you sure it died of old age? all the other inhabitants are fine? water parameters are in check? usually for clowns, it's hard to assume that two will just pair back up..
    but a female clown will always be a female clown (yours being female since it was the larger one)
    a male clown can change to a female clown
    and a non-sex clown can become a male or a female clown

    so if i tried to pair this remaining clown up with another clown, i would definitely choose a clown that is smaller than the one that is in your tank so your male right now can become a female

    I'm sorry for your loss as well.

    Do NOT add a new clown until the remaining clown is hosting somewhere again. They are still looking for their mate when they are swimming around. There is a great risk of aggression if you add another clown too fast.

    I would not add another clown until the solitary clown is eating and you can determine that it was in fact old age and not something else.

    Thanks for all your responses. My clown is eating now and is actually swimming around more visibly than the two of them ever did. They used to hide in the back corner of the tank and only come out at feeding time or when the tank light comes on at night. I just feel bad that his mate is gone :( Are clowns okay to just keep one?
    I don't think it's a tank problem. Everything seems fine and the other tank mates are okay...blue tang, marine betta, skunk shrimp, and hermit crabs.

    When you decide to try adding another clown to hopefully have them pair up, do so by purchasing 3-5 clowns so that they can pair up naturally instead of forcing them to pair which doesn't always happen and could cause aggression.
    Sorry for your loss of the female, hopefully you will have another pair in due time.
