As far as I know, Knoffler has never used a pick. He plays with his fingers, like Jeff Beck plays with his thumb (often).

I respect your musical tastes, unclejed. I'm a bit disappointed Keith Richards wasn't included in that long list of yours. BTW--the man's name was Hendrix. :)

Listen to some Syd Barret, Pat Matheney, Phil Keaggy, Les Paul, Russ Freeman, Kerry Livgren, Robert Johnson, Robert Cray, Ice Pick King, Bugs Henderson, Bryan Lee, Buddy Holly, Steve Hackett, Yngvey Malmsteen, Steve Walsh, Joe Walsh

I really could go on and on but I would have to dig out my CD's and I'm too lazy. LOL

Robert Cray and Joe Walsh. :) Good guitarists for sure.

Leave it to me to post a Dylan video, eh? If the guitar solo sounds familiar, it shoult. Despite the "show band" in the video--this is Mick Taylor and Mark Knoffler from Rolling Stones and Dire Straits fame, playing guitars. It's amazing to think that attractive blonde isn't actually playing, isn't it? :)

Hey Uncle Jed... I was just teasing you about the boring comment... I respect your taste in music, but I see and hear guitarists play all the time and technical ability just doesn't do it for me.

You gotta have soul, play with feeling, and it's gotta be rock and roll for me to tap my feet.

Give me Chuck Berry, Mick Jones, Ron Asheton, Carl Perkins, or Johnny Ramone ANY day of the week over some guy noodling on a wooden paddle with the technical proficiency of a skilled surgeon.

I can appreciate that. A friend of mine who I consider my guitar mentor is incredulous that I dont' care much for Carlos Santana. My explanation to him is close to what you say above. I told him that while I see his virtuosity, and appreciate that his skills are in the top 1% of all guitar players--his music simply gives me no joy whatsoever. I know the man is great, just not in my list fav's.

Expand your horizons. You'll be pleasantly surprised if you appreciate a good guitarist. Above, I have country blues, electric blues, jazz, jazz fusion, classic rock, modern rock, etc. They all play with feeling too.

I'm the exact opposite of you. I would rather have someone skilled sit on a stool on a stage and play good music.

I've probably seen Chuck Berry live more times than you've heard him on the radio. I've been to his old farm and restaurants, his new house, and he knows me by name. His skills are severely lacking now and can only play memorized songs (which he does fairly well), but he is still an amazing showman....even at his age. At one time he could jam like a jazz musician....no more.
