WOW, did this thread get going! There are so many and all the ones you are mentioning could be considered "great". I was just sitting around wathing some youtube of "Brothers In Arms" and Sultans and the such and thought what a great guitarist Mark is and thought I would post. Just like the other night VH1 had the R30 Rush concert on and wow! that lead guitar (name slips my mind) is unreal! I was never really a fan but did like that concert. Sorry for the fast fingers and mis-spelling Hendrix.

FWIW, I don't like Pearl Jam, especially the stuff Eddie Vedder has written either.

Rush's guitarist is Alex Lifeson. He is well deserving of being listed as a top tier guitarist.

Let's not forget Les Paul. If it were not for him, most of these players wouldn't even have been noted.

Funny you should say. I was the biggest Rush fan in 1978 when they made their breakthrough. I listened to them religiously until the late 80's. During that time I picked up the guitar. After I started learning, I developed an ear for what I think is talent, skill, soul, call it what you will. It wasn't two years ago that I bought 2112 again. Wow. Was I disappointed! Turns out Alex Leifson is no great shakes.

Never liked Pearl Jam either, Horkn. Might sound like an off the wall comment, but Eddie Vedder's bottom lip always appears wet to me. :)

The recently late Les Paul was mentioned by inwall75. One of the finest contributors to Rock 'N Roll.

Yeah, everyone knows that Geddy Lee is the real talent in that band;D

And just so you know, behind every good guitarist is an even better bass player;D

Yeah. Geddy does have a good voice, and he's almost as good on bass as is Neil Peart on drums--no lack of skill in that band on bass and drums for sure. But as an adult, I don't see Alex Leifson in the same light as I did at 13 years old. Of course, back then I thought Gene Simmons was the best bassist on the planet. :)

In retrospect, Alex Leifson and Gene Simmons (love 'em both. . ) are amateurs compared to Keith Richards, Dave Davies, Steve Howe, Stanley Clarke, Paul McCartney and John Paul Jones, to name a few.

I don't want to sound like a blowhard, but I have been working around music/ musicians for 12+ years... I have seen/ heard more than most people will in their lifetime... lots of really awesome stuff and lots of really awful stuff... This doesn't make my experience any more credible than the next guy, it's just my experience... I guess some people drift towards more complex musical structures when they get older... not me. I'm drifting towards simpler times. Drums, bass, guitar... that's where it's at for me. You can throw in sax and piano, too, if you like.

good music is relative then, I guess. I like good music.

That is seriously one of the most bada$$ things I have heard in a long time... though, I have to admit I haven't heard him on the radio much... I have tons of vinyl and he is heavy in my rotation though.

That's the thing though, he had some amazing songs... some of the best rock and roll EVER written! who cares if he can/can't "jam" like a jazz musician??

Chuck Berry himself pretty much sums it up for me:
