The brown one above the little guy in the photo has me worried due to its... brown color.

the other little one in the middle left side of the picture also has me concerned. and if that is what I think it is why hasn't my peppermint shrimp eaten it already. Should I take another route or add more shrimp?

The brown coral looks stressed it may be getting too much light. The other little guy is a Majano anemone and your peppermint will not eat it.Also keep in mind that some individual Peppermint Shrimp are better at managing aiptasia while others may not be interested in aiptasia at all. Joes juice works great at killing the Mojano. You will want to do it as soon as possible IME Mojanos spread quickly especially in tanks with high nutrient levels. Good luck and welcome to 3reef.8)

thank you for the reply so quick and accurate too, I wasn't sure if it was a baby aiptasia or something different and you identified it so thank you very much. I will shift to non direct light area and hopefully my local shop has Joes Juice to pickup this weekend, I've spotted two of these little Majano's now. :(

Thanks for the welcome, I am a noob here but will be a friendly addition at times while I soak in the info myself from everyone here.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yup Vinny is right majano and peppermint will not touch it.

The corals appears to be a Yellow Scroll coral (turburnaria), it will change from yellow to brown depending on the lighting, a fairly hardy LPS. What lighting is it presently under?

    Welcome to 3reef.

Good call I forgot to ask. There are many reasons why corals "brown out" so knowing what light fixture you have and the size of your tank will help us diagnose the problem.8)

don't laugh its small, rsm 130 with 60lb live rock with stock t5 lights, the lr is from a system that was under metal halide the past year(i'll have to check)
should I look towards adding another light to my t5's for extra light or just replace the old t5's with fresh ones? (maybe the light change over is shocking things) I've seen t5's work well with plants but at a limited distance, after the bulb was more than 6 inches away or farther the intensity seemed to drop off very quicky each inch past that. Where MH would penetrate intense light multiple feet without drop off of intensity. I suppose someone better than me with this stuff would have a ratio of ideal or optimum light per square foot of tank or something.

any input and comments are appreciated very much, if I can not learn the hard way from others experience things will work out good. :) so thank you!

Thats a great tank its not the size that counts.LOL That has 2 x 55 watt bulbs? T5s are just as good as metal halides IMO. I run them on my 90.T5 bulbs are usually good for around 10 months so if they are that old I would definitely change them . Just keep an eye on it.8)

corals also brown out when there is an excess of nutrients in the water which may be the case, if it is that mojano anemone will be 5 mojanos soon and they will multiply like crazy. Joes juice as mentioned will help get them in check and aiptasia x works well too, its basically a thick solution that when applied glues the nems closed so they cant feed then they starve and die.

yep its the dual 55 watt t5's that I probably won't find at a store and be forced to order online, the joe's juice is on the list of must do this weekend for sure. My local shop was trying to talk me into those LED light strips, the ones that I don't know anything about personally. They look compact enough to custom fit my hood pretty easy in combination with the stock t5's. Not a priority right now but something down the road maybe when my tank is stocked and growing everything not just some purple mushrooms and polyps, I have high hopes for this little tank and my african nemo seems to be stoked on all the new lr

so with the t5 lighting and size tank I'm using, would it be best to have my browned scroll coral close to the old lights or more of a semi shaded or darker area of less intense light?

I personally have never owned that particular coral but seeing how its stressed I would probably just leave it where it is and see if it recovers. Also check your parameters.Calcium,Alkalinity,Magnesium,Nitrates,Phosphates, and PH.;)
