I recently bought an entire 60 gal saltwater set up and one fish that was included in the deal was a one spot fox face. After doing a little research I kinda was baffled to find that it houses its toxins in its fins. I thought about getting rid of it (because I heard a story of a lion fish sting) and litteraly scared me. Its a beautiful fish with a very mild manner personality and would hate to get rid of it just because im scared or it (especially my girlfriend) Ive been trying to do some research on the venom and the affects its has on the human body but all I get is an answer "it feels like a 100 bee stings" well Im really trying to find a more in-depth answer and if it can be lethal. its a pretty good size at about 6-7" long so it isnt no baby (do adults house more venom than babys?) Im trying to find specific info on the venom if you can help me in any way I would really appreciate it.

The bigger they are, the harder the punch thats for sure. A few members on here have been stung and they are still around, Though I believe if you have an allergy to bee's then it would be far worse.

I myself am allergic to bee stings, I hand feed my magnificent foxface, I have transfered him from one tank to another, Just take precautions and not be afraid. By the way, mines 9" lol Im sure he would pack a pretty big punch.

I think if you want an expeirence, the member divott on here made a comment on my thread about someone he know getting stung. Guy, might have some further insight.

I dont think its venom is lethal.. it might be painful but i dont think it will kill you.
I have a foxface as well and trust me, He isnt going to sting you when you put your hand in the tank, rather he will swim away. They are pretty mellow fish and they will only use their spines as a Defensive mechanism.
I put my hand in the tank pretty often and he swims right by hand no harm done. If i get to close to him he just swims away.

dont get rid of him. There is no reason to be scared of the fish. Just be prepared and know what you are dealing with. Now you do and get on with your reefing.

    well

Im actually not scared of the fish itself, I just want to know if I do somehow happen to get stung, If I should go to the hospital immediately. Thats basically the whole reason Im asking this question because no one seems to know the affects of the venom. thats all

The effects of their venom can vary with each individual and the fact that one may be allergic to its venom could compound the situation. Small children and elderly persosn, I'm sure, will be affected by the toxin more so than a health young adult.
The fact that the fish contains venom is no reason to get rid of the fish. It should however, make you more aware and careful when you stick your hands in the tank. They are very beautiful fish and are great herbivores as well.
Just be careful and respect them as well as any other animla in your tank and the wild!

The whole key is to pay attention. Different people react to certain things. I had a magnificent fox in my tank and when i redid the aquascape the maintenance man grabbed him with his hand because he says nets damage the fish. Well while returning the fish back into my tank the foxface wiggled and cut his finger deep. He then proceeded to drop my fish on the floor and just left. He came back, got his equipment and said he will have to finish the job later which he didn't. I get a call later that he went to the ER because his heart rate and breathing began to decrease. Point is he didn't pay attention. I guess he thought he was invincible and almost got him a front row at a church.
