I'm wanting to set up a 20gal frag tank, no sand or rock just egg crate to set stuff on. I want to set it up right next to my display (a 110gal with a 55 gal sump) and plum it into the one sump. If i just add 20gal of water, i shouldnt have a cycle, right? and is there any problem that i might be over looking?

if your using the water from your display without any rock you should be fine. But the reason I have a frag tank it 2 fold, one to be able to frag my corals and a place to store frags of all my corals so if I have a problem like a meltdown (god forbid) I will still have pieces of my coral. It my frag tank is hooked into my system I will loose everything in it also. So if thats why your setting up a frag tank you will want to keep them separate.

I have 4 tanks running into 1 sump. I like using the water going from my larger tank then routing it into my frag tank then returning to my sump. That way you dont have to add another pump other than some powerheads to direct flow. You do loose the ability to have a separate system but I have never needed one.
With the size of your tanks you should be able to add that quantity of water with no cycle problems.

I don't have a sump (yet), but I do something close. from my main tank, I pump water into a 2nd tank and then gravity feed through a bulkhead back into the main tank. I do all of my filtration, heat/cooling, UV, etc in/on the main tank. The only thing I have for the 2nd tank is an air pump.

I had no issues with cycling, the water is stable and I am very happy.
