Well, I guess the title says it all. My skimmer overflowed big time last nite and hubby woke up (he gets up earlier than me) and came out to find about 3 gallons of water on the floor and dripping through the ceiling in the basement. Oops

I will be honest, I am so nervous about having a sump.

i was in your situation about 2 months ago. But it was because of my stupidity i took my ato hose out of my tank and unplugged it but let it hang off the side.... yeaaaa 4 gallons of water down into the living room. 500 dollars later i have a brand new ceiling in my living room and i learned a very important lesson

Don't be nervous. Does your skimmer have the option to hook a hose up to the collection cup? If so, I would grab a couple gallon container and put the hose into that for this exact reason.

I had this on my HOB skimmer and it worked a few times in my favor. I'm actually testing murphy's law by not having that on my current skimmer...

If you have an in sump skimmer how did it overflow? It would just run back into the sump.

My sentiments exactly! If it's set up right, the overflow goes back where it came from- into the sump and the DT.

Sorry about your water on the floor though. We'll get it figured out so it won't happen again!

I think we need a picture Mindy!

^^^ What they said. Coincidentally, my big skimmer overflowed for the first time today. No idea why, but it overflowed right back into the sump.

Be careful of using the collection cup overflow tube, especially when you have an ATO.

I don't think OFK has a sump, sounds like a hob skimmer. Hence the fear of a sump.

^^+1 to zesty! I don't have my sump yet. My skimmer is a HOB. Just with the overflowing, it made me nervous about having a sump. I know the skimmer can't overflow but worried the sump will somehow. I know it does happen.

I think you'll be able to test it pretty easily since you're setting up a new DT and sump at the same time.
-What I did was when everything is ready, kill the power, let the drain flow down until the water in the DT is below your drain holes. That's the first spot that can get you. Not enough room for the drain water.
-The second is the back-siphon. This will drain from your return into your sump. This will happen if your return does not have a siphon break on your return.

Is your new tank drilled on the bottom of the tank or the back?
