open top or glass top?

    Hi, never used an open top, too paranoid about something getting in and crashing the tank. I have a Nova that stands on the the top aquarium edge, not a problem, you will be fine if you go that rout.

    Always use a open top as you need oxygen (gas exchange) to the tank.

    If you have a sump and/or skimmer you get all the gas exchange you need, not to mention water surface agitation.

    I do hybrid, I pull apart the glass canopy and only cover half the tank. It lets the full intensity of lighting to enter the tank and provides some protection of covering the tank as unclejed mentioned.

    The close top can be bad, due to the gas exchange, but open to can be much worst
    try this it might keep you fish from carpet surfing and also foreign objects from getting in it

    and it is very inexpensive

    I do the open top with the egg crate as well.. You can find this in Lowes or Home Depot in the lighting section.
