A lot of gobies aren't all that active. Many spend most of their time in burrows or caves or resting on the sandbed.

I wouldn't consider 3 inches "fairly large". Pretty hard to find anything that doesn't get that big. Just my opinion... :)

IME, clowns can be just as aggressive as damsels. I once read something that referred to clowns as, "Damsels in pretty pajamas". I wouldn't go with chromis though because they are a schooling fish and you don't have space for a school. That being said, they can be kept alone. I added five chromis to my 90 and one slowly killed off the others, so he is now alone.

I would just run the pair of clowns. In that size tank they will swim the whole thing, and anything else is going to crowd it imo

A local reefer has 5" chromis in his tank... I'd call that somewhat large for a 30 gal. ;)

Darn, I really like assessors! maybe one clown and a assessor? I am making aquascapes and have a few that allow lots of swimming room and caves\overhangs:)

I think you'd be fine with 3 fish in a 30. You could do a pair of clowns and the assessor.
