Raise the water level in the sump to the level it was working at ? Baffle it off with a piece of glass so the skimmer sits in a higher level than the return? if it was working at the higher level, it sounds easy to fix. You can get glass cut for cheap at local shops. Make your own custom sump. Fix the back-siphon problem by adjusting the line in the tank or drilling a small hole in the necessary area to break the siphon.

Actually, I thought he was just getting technical. A bulkhead is a partition. They are not called bulkhead fittings for no reason.

A baffle is actually something that redirects.

But ya, we know what you mean.

O.k. young man (if that is you in the avatar) I think I know what you are looking for as far as the actual reason it matters how "high" the water level is. The skimmer itself is in a sense dis-placing water in the sump as far as, it is using X amount of the sump water to run. Shut off the skimmer and some (about 1/2) of the skimmer water siphons back to the sump and the sump water rises. When you turn on the skimmer it takes in water from the sump and initially you must add water to the sump to make up for the loss. As water evaporates and the level in the sump drops so does the level in the skimmer and thus the micro bubbles are no longer up to where the neck goes into the cup and the froth is no longer productive.

There should be an adjustment knob to raise the water level on the skimmer. You can use that but you must remember that when you add top off water you must first return the adjustment to its' position it was before. Use a maker to show the proper setting when you have the sump water higher and a you will always know where to dial back to.

I hope this clears things up for you, if you have other questions...ask away.

It doesn't matter at all what the water level is for a recirculating skimmer. After owning one I dont think I could ever justify going back to a non-recirculating model. It's not too hard at all to mod any in-sump model, there are loads of DIY's and how to's all over the internet.
