I have to say that I'm most happy with my linux box. I have it running on an old laptop (8 years old!) and the thing never gives me any problems.
If you switch over to linux, be prepared to be frustrated. Spend a lot of time on IRC in the distro-specific linux channels to find answers to your newb problems. A word of caution, linux IRC guys are grouchy nerdy a**holes. You will get chewed out for every question you ask, but you will also get answers to aforementioned questions.
Don't stray away from the more popular window managers (Gnome, Lindows, GTK, etc) until you get comfortable with the ins and outs of linux. They resemble windows more closely than other, more minimalist, window managers. I personally use WindowMaker, it has no icons and I had to script most of the menus myself. Not fun for a beginner.

FYI fellow reefers, any students currently enrolled in a college that has a edu email address can get windows 7 for $29.99. I think i paid somewhere around $34 shipped to my door. You can get home edition or professional for the same price. I prefer the professional.

    The site is http://win741.com

It is the official microsoft website for this promotion

Mac OSX FTMFW, it seems as though every windows OS that comes out is just trying to keep up with mac and aren't successful (like vista's and 7's tool bar).

You know whats sad that is so true. Bill Gates is a genious. He is constantly releasing new OS which fix problems of the current OS and add different issues to the new OS. This way your updating your OS. Its a great marketing strategy but not for me I would rather stick with something that works and doesn't constantly release new versions.

I have tried basically everything out there, to include the server versions. I still run 2000 server on my file sharing tower.

For my everyday, I run Ubuntu. Easy to install, smooth running. Only issue is Lexmark printers are not supported. Well, not many of them. My wireless PMCIAA card was also a PITA to get working properly too. If you have the builtin version, easy. Just not the card. This may just be an IBM thing though.

For a basic everyday computer, I still recommend XP Pro. Most stable, secure version still being supported.

Have not tried W7 and honestly, don't care to. That's pretty sad for being Microsoft Certified.
