this is only my opinion. what mayweather did was within legal terms of boxing. you should keep your guard up all the time and it was an inexperienced mistake ortiz made and paid for it. as for the headbutt, it was clearly an intentional one out of ortiz's frustrations of not landing clear shot even tho he cornered mayweather. mayweather is a slick boxer and a defensive genius.
as for being a sportsman, mayweather failed this category. before he unleashed the left right combo he made sure that referee cortez was not paying attention.
i would put the blame on the referee on this one. first and foremost as the referee was giving ortiz the 1 point penalty he forgot to instruct mayweather to stay in the neutral corner so as soon as he let go of ortiz hands, mayweather was already within reach and if you notice that mayweather was the one who initiated to touch gloves (this is not a sparring sesion that you can start fighting as soon as you touch gloves, that is why there is a third man in the ring as authority but cortez did not play that part) and cortez was notifying the time keeper to start time and by the time cortez was to instruct "fight" ortiz was already down. and as mayweather admitted that when they touched gloves it was indication of the fight continuing without known by the ref. so blame this controversial fight to the ref. the result is supposed to be disqualification of mayweather he was even puzzled why the heck was ortiz on the canvas and took a second to start counting. cortez has been criticized for being incompetent at some of his bouts.
as for the winner? a win is a win no matter what but is is a shameful win for taking advantage of someone who is not ready to fight and waiting for instructions from the ref to resume the fight. it's time for cortez to retire from officiating boxing matches.
