So I had my heart on adding a flame angel to my tank after about 6-8 months. I went to my usual store and they said their ok as long as you keep the water good. I went to a different store, the place our goby came from which I swore I'd never do business with, and he said he won't carry them because their too hard to keep alive and they only order them if someone asks for one.

My husband is heartbroken, but seeing as the guy knows I have a 40 gallon breeder tank and than tried to tell me that I could add a few more sand gobies and a tang I wasn't too convinced he was the best source.

I've kept numerous dwarf angels, including flames, with no problem. Proper diet is key. You can find prepackaged marine angel blends that include the necessary ingredients.

I've never shied away due to fragility. They will eventually eat you coral though.

I had one for about a year it did great never had any problems with it. I love flame angels they are very active. I did feed more often after I got it because of the fear of it eating my corals. I fed alot of mixed foods try not to feed one simple food. They will grow tired of the same old flake.... On another note my tank had a nitrate problem from the start never could get them below 20ish ppm.

I've owned one for about 18 months now. No issues, can be a picky eater at times, but aggressive when hungry. Very thick fish that none of the others will mess with. He chases my YT damsel, but never bites him or any other fish. One issue is, its hard to add additional fish after a flame as they can be territorial to new comers. If you want to add another fish after wards it has to be bigger. I wouldn't keep a flame angel in anything smaller than a 75g that's not stocked too heavily. LFSs will say you can place them in smaller tanks, but that's why they have a reputation for dying easily.

Well the flame angel would be the final addition to our tank. We have an Orange spotted goby and now a pair of clowns. I wanted a blue neon cleaner goby but the stores have told me they barely get those in anymore, so I was thinking a firefish than the angel. Also I don't have vitals either don't plan on them right now either.

I love mine. Feeds Mysis and a good mixed food you don't have other angels. You will be ok

I have one, and the one I got nips at everything, and I mean everything:
    clam
    snail
    corals
    hermit crabs
    other fish

The only thing he doesn't nip is the cleaner shrimp, and I'm sure that's because it does a service to him.

But these characteristics are fish dependent. You may get one that is more docile. As for mine, he eats anything I feed with.

Ok so since we shouldn't put him in a 40 gallon would a hawkfish work? The fish store suggested some other dwarf angel it was really pretty with blue and stripes I think. This fish is going to be the "centerpiece" fish of our tank. We will be upgrading to a 75-90 gallon in a couple years when we move, so even a fish that will be ok in a smaller tank for a year could be suggested.
