    Yes you would have to have a power head dedicated to the skimmer.

    sapphire skimmer i have on my nc does a great job of pulling out nasty stuff with a pretty small bioload

    Check out ebay for a good used HOB skimmer,they seem to be on there regularly as a lot of people that upgrade to a larger tank or install a sump want to sell them.I was able to pick up a CPR bakpak for $55 shipped.
