Hi everyone - I am looking for a new skimmer for my sump. I have a 125g FOWLR tank and need a new skimmer. I currently run a Coralife Superskimmer 125 and really hate it.
I need something that will fit in the sump. My space is 8" x 13.5".
The Tunze really looks like a nice fit for the space and size tank.

Any opinions or other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Never used it but I'm interested in how well it works. I may buy this to replace my AquaC EV-120.

That's good considering it's rated for tanks up to 52 gallons.

Ya, learned lessons. Sometimes just because a device is in mainstream use does not mean it is fantastic. Did research on Tunze and found many high end aquarist use this companies devices. I am sold on the Tunze line.

They work, but for the $$ there are better skimmers out there. some people really have trouble dialing them in, others work perfect out of the box. A good friend of mine had a difficult time getting it to perform when nutrient levels were lower...not that there wasnt anything to take it, but it struggled.

For a small footprint look at the ATI BM160 and the new MSX/Octo line....both utilize a sicce meshwheel and will inject more air for it's size than anything else currently available.

Are external skimmers an option? I used a DAS EX-1 on my old 125 reef and would highly suggest looking into them if you're not limited by it's dimensions. If you can afford it an EX-2, would be even better.

The new Tunze Master DOC Protein Skimmers beat out every other manufacturer for air/water intake. The Tunze 9460 ($1,818 ) has 634 GPH air capacity with 1,030 GPH throughput and uses 69 watts (rated for up to 1,585 gallons)! The Bubble King 300 Internal ($2,069) has an air capacity of 528 GPH with 1,585 GPH throughput and uses 58 watts (rated for 700 gallons). ATI Bubble Master 250 ($840) has an air capacity of 528 GPH and uses 80 watts (rated for 500 gallons).

And what pump do those tunze models use?

the sicce psk2500 :D ...i left those out as I dont believe they are in his price range. (FWIW, you may want to check those numbers you posted against real user #'s ;) ) rumor also has it the ati controlable sicce's will have a 1:1 air/water ratio

the highest air/intake/watt will likely be by the RD2 with hastelloy mesh...but I dont foresee too many people purchasing that unit

    The ATI is 528 GPH.

    * Using modified EHEIM / ATI-pumps, it is possible to achieve the exceptional air intake of 2000l/h.
    * Small footprint and a low clearing height of the skimmer. This will allow the skimmer to fit into the sump without taking too much space
    * Silent operation of the skimmer attributed by the pump as well as the employment of air-filters.
    * Ease of maintenance, especially the collection cup which can be easily remove with just one hand
    * Competitive price when compared to other commercial skimmers with the same specifications.

For every 3 parts of water each pump pulls in 2 parts air for an efficiency rating of approximately 67%. Most other skimmers on the market have an efficiency of less than 35%. Power Consumption: less than 40 Watts/0.6 Amps per pump. Warranty: 1 year. Recommended Tank Size: 500+ gallons.

Where did you get your stats?

I do not believe that info is not complete. The eheim was used on their "twister" model. They use a modified sicce psk2500 on the bubble master...fwiw, most air intakes are measure in lph/scfh.

The sicces with a meshwheel pull ~40-50 scfh. Dual sicces at 50 scfh (msx 250 or ati 250, is more air than 9460 at lower wattage due to increase in air)

A proper designed meshwheel will pull more air than a proper designed NW. (ati v tunze)
