So I was looking for some info on mandarins and pods and whatnot and remember about those ORA ones, the captive bred ones that supposedly ate frozen food and whatnot. Anyone have experience with these? I'm pretty sure that we're not there yet, but I wouldnt really know. IMO it seems a little bit far-fetched; to be able to keep a mandarin that eats frozen and doesnt need pods would be really amazing.

Some people had good results with them, but alot havent. I wouldnt bet on them eating and if you were thinking of keeping it in your 10g I wouldnt try it personally.

lol of course you'd bring up my 10 gallon. It was more of a general question since I will be upgrading, but obviously it wont be right now.

Eh, it seems to be more worked up than what it really is. I never got one, but I know a few people on here did. Kacey had hers for a few weeks before it passed away. Obviously they will not all eat solely frozen/pellet food. It's definitely a hit or miss. Even with these ORA mandarins.

there are many stories on the interenet and even special websites documenting the differences of ORA's and wild caughts. you could have used (and still can) the google custom search bar too.

unfortunately i'm not really clear what the question is here....

yep i was thinking that we weren't there yet... I'm thinking that nature made it so that mandarins couldn't be kept by people but rather they live in the oceans peacefully. No wonder so little people have kept them successfully for a long time.

Beyond that.....they are still dragonettes. They want to eat aaaallllllll day long so you still have to have plenty of pods. Consider the fact that they also eat prepared foods as a supplemental feeding.

not only for mandarins, the fish you see available in the hobby is a very Very VERY small fraction of what actually is out there.

I was just asking if ORA mandarins actually could be kept without feeding them pods pretty much. I did look up on google too; thats why i was thinking it was far-fetched, since they're so hard to care for

From the sound of it, they are tank bred but aren't born and raised eating dead food - just pods. It's great that they aren't wild caught and all but they are expensive and I've read many people on here reporting they could not get their ORAs to transfer.
