Most of my Coralline is green with some red and darker red and the usual purple. Every now and then I find a rock with Orange Coralline on it and no matter what type of coral if any is on the rock I get it. I have tried for ages to keep Orange Coralline in my aquarium but it is alway's covered up with the purple then red, What is it about my water that makes it impossible to keep the Orange Coralline? I use the basic Instant Ocean. Do you think if I used a reef salt I would have better luck with it. Here is the last rock I bought a few day's ago with the Orange Coralline on it. Three day's ago the whole rock was Orange.

I would guess its more due to your lighting. Many photosynthetic animals come in a different spectrum of colors, each color suited to a different intensity of light. Maybe the orange is a lower light demand type. Maybe it demands more. What ever the reason for it not spreading the problem seems to be that your tank is the perfect home for purple coralline. Never thought I would say that's a problem.

Mike is exactly correct. That's why our tanks are dominated with pinks and purples. In addition to orange, there's some nice shades of greens as well.

    About your coraline question though:
the color of coraline is dictated greatly by the wavelengths it chooses to absorb... however, when it first grows the color it forms when first forming the calcium base is determined by the concentration of Iodine in the water ;) higher concentration= darker color
