So I purchased, kind of impulsively an orange spot goby last week for my 20 gallon tank. He seems to be doing fine in regards to accepting food, but he doesn't burrow at all. I found this to be very odd because I thought they were burrowers by nature. My sand bed is .5-1 inch crushed coral. Initially I thought that maybe the crushed coral is to big for him to move, but my Flavivertex seems to be able to move it around just fine as well as my newly acquired pistol shrimp which kind of leads me into another question.

I purchased the Pistol Shrimp a few days ago after seeing and hearing that they can be paired with Goby's like mine. My pistol shrimp has been burrowing away but my Goby has completely ignored him. I have heard that they sometimes match up in 10 minutes, sometimes a month, sometime never. If my goby isnt burrowing at all, I dont see how they would ever form a relationship. Anything I could do here?

Sorry for the longwinded post, any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Your goby isnt burrowing because they require a sand substrate. They sift the sand through their gills. They are not going to be able to sift crushed coral through their gills. I would recommend replacing the crushed coral to accommodate your goby.

what size is the shrimp and fish. the shrimp should be smaller than the goby. Normal parameters are goby .75" fish 1.75." Good size chart to follow.

I have a Sleeper banded Bullet Goby and he sift's crushed coral through his gill's fine. He is 5 inches long now. He didnt sift when he was smaller but at about 3 inches he went at it and hasnt stopped yet. Before that he just knawed algae and stuff off of the rock;s, as far as the shrimp relationship I would give it time Build a cave for the Goby and let the shrimp come to him. If its meant to be it will happen.

I still think diamond spot gobies prefer sand to sift. With time, he will start sifting, but probably would sift sooner if you had sand.
