Exactly as the title states, I am curious as to what peoples opinions are about them? Sadly after looking again they are no longer a sponsor of 3Reef it looks like. I however living in Canada have access to the Canadian distrubutor for orphek. Dealing personally with the Coral Reef Shop I have been able to see all of orpheks lights in person. As well they have the ecotech radion next to the orpheks and my personal opinion is a very vast difference between how the two make the coral reflect from the colors being provided.

in a side by side comparison I found the Radion gave a much whiter effect to the overall coloring versus the pr156. I prefer a 20k look so it all comes down to the end users preference. Back to my point about orphek as I have dealt with their units in person and got to take an apogee to them and right to the radion. There is comparable differences to the par readings being provided. I feel they are an amazing led company that many don't even realize.
*See Dr. Sanjays tests on Advanced Aquarist for details about par comparisons.

As I read more into orphek and their website it really surprised me to see as a company that is devoted to only led aquarium lighting, how much research and testing they put into our hobby. Looking at data and tests they perform not just in contrast to their lighting but to overall understanding of tank conditions. They even have articles explaining importance of water chemistry and more. This impressed me, sure you have to take the research with a grain of salt because it is being provided by a company. But most of us have a very good understanding of science and how to find out on our own if information is accurate based on our individual research. As a general consensus of reading online that orphek is evil, awful and etc.. it surprises me to research and see how good a company they actually are.

Very unfortutnate one individual went on his own personal vendetta to trash other products and provide false information that ended up exploding in his face and no one hears from Mike Maddox anymore. But it is in our humane nature to remember the negative aspects of everything over the good it may also provide.

check out their website and read some of the information they have done since their they cleared up the Mike Maddox issue.

In my conclusion after discussing led lighting with a vast majority of reefers in Canada(Locals). Orphek is one of the top lighting companies up here lighting our tanks. You can see for yourself the power and beauty of Orpheks lighting if any of you have seen peters 1350g tank on RC. Or simply go on youtube and type in their name. at seeing on ebay average price being 700-750 for a pr156, and 800-850 for the nilus. Their DIF pendants are even cheaper, overall the price point is not that bad compared to the radion.

More will come out at MACNA later this month where orphek is having a booth setup so their will be a great chance for everyone to see them in person and ask their pros any questions you have.

In the meantime, what are others opinions on this company?

Just a note, I do not work or have any relation to orphek. I am an amateur aquariast. My personal opinions are obviously of preference to color being provided and effect of quality of the light being emitted. I am not debating effectiveness of leds or a comparison to the ecotech radion. I only used this fixture as reference after seeing it side by side with a pr156 and studying dr sanjays reports. Not debating if the ecotech is a good light or not. It is a extremely good light as well.

Ive seen one of their lights in person, a pr156 i believe and I really like the looks of the fixture and the color it put out into the tank wasn't bad by any means.

I dont know much about them, but what i dont like is when i go to google and do a search for, "orphek lighting review" a website called ripoff report comes up. now I dont know anything about the ripoff report website, but i wouldn't consider it a good thing.

I also dont care for the price, its far too high imo. Maybe its all the gold they use in their emitters.

I have had negative experiences dealing with orphek and their reps. To put it shortly I was lied to and then when we finally tested a fixture it did not stand up to any of it's claims.

If Greg stumbles upon this thread he will have a few negative words to say about them lying to him also.

thanks for the responses, I would love Gcarrol to chime in and hear more about these mess ups.
After reading the ripoff report, it was apparently written by a LFS.

That LFS also missed each orphek unit is made to order. hence why it took a little while. You get much better quality units when they are built to order rather than a shipment of 10,000 lights from a manufacturer. If you order one of their lights you can request different colors to be used.

I want to hear more of these claims.
Reading many other responses to rip off report

"Fact is, there have been 4 of these reports, 3 on the same day within hours of each other...can you say coincidence? I wouldn't. I'd say "someone" is getting paid to bash Orphek just because they can. Grow up. I don't know what LED company is paying for this slander but they obviously cannot compete with Orphek since this is the road they've taken. Let the numbers do all the talking...Orphek is vastly superior to every other LED company out there! Do your homework before you decide to bash a company for no reason."

This is the whole point of this. Clear the air of misinformation.

Dingo would you be able to explain your situation?

There really is no misinformation. The Orphek Nilus (better version) is a decent light that is vastly overpriced by nearly $600.

It doesn't even come close to the PAR provided by my DIY Cree light, and is now matched by other chinese made lights that only cost $299. I have a pre-production version of this fixture below that Reefbreeders is a seller of. It easily matches and exceeds the Nilus. These are also built to order. The only difference between my fixture and Reefbreeders is that mine uses Neutral and Warm Whites instead of Cool Whites.

    reefbreeders

This was taken with my Apogee PAR Meter. I won't even post my DIY Cree light numbers, because they are nearly double. The fixture isn't centered so the right side is reading higher. 34 gallon cube.. 24x20x24

You could buy 3 of these and cover an entire 120 gallon tank for the price of 1 Nilus, and get similar or better performance. You would get as good or better customer service from reefbreeders or even the factory that makes these lights themselves, so there really is no reason to even consider an Orphek with options like this available.
