I ran pro am with NEATV I enjoyed ever minute of my 8 years there. I ran the c class the b class the a class and the pro am class. Was the best part of my life. I never thought of stress work or anything other then loving the next turn! Win or lose I was happy and just thinking about the next turn.

Slow of course is a relative term:)

Off the line, yeah, these older tech twins will take even the new tech 600's, the only 750 (gsxr750)out there is a quicker bike in every regard.

Top end, my full power non retarded original ECU 97 has enough to stay ahead of new r6's even with mods, but my bike has a full yosh race pipeset(not just the mufflers), the original widow maker ECU and 97 spec heads and cams, airbox upgrades( flapper removal and throat enlargement with larger than stock openings and little things that make a difference like iridium plugs, 98+ t stat housing, and a BMC race air filter, and a Yosh box EFI tune.

As far as tank slappers, I have had one in 30,000 miles, at Road America race track coming out of turn 11. And yes, I saved it getting a thumbs up from the corner worker. Other than that, while really pushing it, I've never had an issue. I do have the retrofitted factory Suzuki steering damper, and that does help. The TLS has a very aggressive head tube angle.

The stock rotary damper instead of a regular shock does not help the minor situation, but it's not bad at all. The first and second generation R1's were far worse for tank slappers than the 97( and even the 98-01) TLS are.
Any internet rumors of it being a death trap are grossly exaggerated. it was awarded the coveted "Bike of the Year" award in 97. It was called the "widowmaker" because it's original ECU was very aggressive especially down low, the bike had no steering damper and the radical head angle only emphasized that. A few motojournalists crashed at the press into in 97, and some early reports of owners getting chucked and killed were around. How truthful those stories were is another thing. Riding a bike is dangerous alone, then add in one with a good amount of power with inexperience and you have a bad recipe.

Basically, it's a great bike, needing to be properly ridden to not crash it. But aren't they all like that?

And yes, that rumble is key. The closest thing to it that is an inline 4 is the 09+ R1 with it's moderately big bang firing order.
