Thanks guys, but he's getting a small goldfish (the fan tail ones, not sure the name) in the 5g Fluval Chi, as he grows and the fish grows, if he's still into it he'll get bigger tanks along the way. There is no way I would have a 5" goldfish in a 5g tank, but I don't see a problem with a 1-1.5" goldfish in a 5g tank.

Picked up some live plants and black background for the tank yesterday...and of course Spongebob and Patrick. We bought a goldfish about an hr ago...here's an updated pic.

Thanks. Yeah, he was very excited about setting up the tank and feeding the fish, he knows we can't overfeed so he count pellets to make sure we don't.

I added a small heater to maintain the temp at 70.

Good thinking, when I had my first tank (20g long with a fantail) I used a heater too, the fish was much more active.

Love your tank! Much more fancy than what I had as a kid :) Hope he enjoys it! ( the sponge bob figurines are awesome!) Does Mr. Fishies have a name?

Love the tank, would probably have done mollies or platties though something where your son can discover the baby fish...that's always fun for the little ones :)

I always steer people away from goldfish, its pretty amazing how big a plain old comet can get long term, and being a reefer you should know that no fish is "disposable" :)

Yeah, I'm even thinking of bumping it up to about 72-74, but slowly.

Lol, I hear you, my first tank was 5 pieces of window glass my dad silicon together but it was cool. Where I grew up in south america there weren't too many LFS or extra cash to buy fish, we threw some bread crumbs into a nearby freshwater stream and caught some fish with a net. A few years later I got into SW fish and caught those too.

yeah I know how it is, I've upgraded tanks many times over the years, my current reef is actually a down size from my last tank. I do hope he sticks with it, I would be happy to buy him a bigger tank as his fish grows.
