We just purchased this little guy a couple days ago. He is a flame red angler. His color is a little dull right now because of the stress of the move, but he is bright red with little white warts all over him.

right now he is only eating live food but we are going to work on switching him over to frozen. Until that time we have purchased a bunch of glass shrimp and some black mollies and are working on establishing a breeding program with them. The shrimp and mollies of course are freshwater fish, so we are slowly acclimating them to be salt.

Anglers are very intersting predator fish. They dont swim very much at all, and can often hide in your rocks so you may not see them a lot. However when you get them trained that you are the source of food, they will come out more. If you look at their bottom fins they actually have "little feet" with tiny little nails on them They use these to "walk" around rocks and sand.

They are called anglers simply because the "fish" for their food. They have this little lure on the top of their head that they will lower in front of their mouth and wave it to entice the food to come to them. Once the food is within stricking distance they are lightening fast and grab it.

They are able to "blend" into their background in order to hide from other predators and even unsuspecting food.

They need to be the only fish in their tank. Their eyes are much bigger then their mouth/stomach and will eventually eat anything that they see. They will literally eat themself to death. There are many stories of these guys eating fish 3-4 times their size. Unfortunately they are unable to digest their big meal and will die. In fact a few years back, my LFS ordered a couple in for me. There was a large white/orange one and a smaller black one. They were not sure which one i would want so they figured they would sell the other to someone else. So I arrive to the store with the store owner beaming so proud of his find. He lead me to the tank where he told me he had placed both of them in the night before. I looked at him, and then at the tank and all i could find was the small black one with a little tail hanging out of his mouth. Being as I was fairly new to anglers, I thought hey at least I know he is eating so I bought him. Unfortunately the larger one was a couple times his size and a few days later he died.

When feeding live food, you must gut load the food. I used to use Brightwell Amino-omega soaked food, but this time I am going to feed the ghost shrimp/fish Rods food as it has a good source of HUFAs in it.

He'll change color based on the tank, so don't expect him to stay red forever!

exactly! The store had him for about 8 week and had him in a black background tank and they said he had turned more black then he was when they first got him. Plus I know the type of food given will help/hinder his color!

he is doing well so far. He hides in the rocks still but he is eating live very well right now!

    Thank to everyone!

The white dot on the top on the second picture is HER esca (lure). She has that and the illicium (fishing rod and line) folded back on top of her head.

It's amazing how something that moves so slow can instantly move so fast. Seriously, it's completely still, ghost shrimp swims by and in a movement that is too fast to really see, the ghost shrimp is gone.
