we've had him for almost as long as we've been in the hobby, and for i'd guess about 5-6 of the months that we've had him of the approximate 9 we only fed mysis shrimp. Found out about 3 months ago that we should be feeding a more wide variety of the foods. We've bought flakes and pellets but he wont eat either of them. even if we soak in garlic to manipulate the smell he'll bite at them and then spit it out. I'd like to get him eating something different ontop of the shrimp which he seems to love but I'm not sure what to get...he hasn't grown much and he's not very big...

Try soaking the mysis in a liquid vitmin/mineral/amino liquid to offer more nutrients for the fish.
Try adding some brine shrimp with spirulina algae and formula frozen foods. Flake and pellet foods are hard to introduce to many species of fish due to texture, taste and smell. Stick with the frozen varieties and just be creative by mixing and adding vitamins to soak the food in.

Mine eats pellets now but was the same as yours. What I did was i soaked some cyclopeeze with some pellets, no garlic or vitamins and bam! now he eats the pellets... not sure if that helps.

Banngai's are tricky picky feeders, good luck.

If the fish was tank raised, then there is more hope for it to be less picky, wild caught ones usually are so picky that survival rates are very low.
