Am I the only one that seems to think frag naming has gotten a little out of control? You know the online vendors selling the:

LE japanese aussie super vice ultra super slammin funky soul stealing moonpie mamba jamba deluxe deepwater mega zoa's.

and it's actually a $5 frag of plain ole emerald zoa's. lol.

I'm all for marketting but there comes a point in time where it gets to be too much ya know? lol.

I find it acceptable to put a persons name in front of a coral and a small catchy name. This does help with sales but on the other hand you also know that you will be looking at something that is: 1. Aquacultured 2. Hardy and used to aquarium conditions 3. Very colorful and 4. a quality cut and cared for frag.
Something by the respected dealers like Jason fox, Steve tyree, Greg Carroll, and other "old time" reefers is IMO very acceptable... But I do not agree with these other guys that just wanna push not so nice maircultured or wild product by throwing a name on it.

LOL! I think with the advent of more aquaculture came more naming of corals in attempt to "separate" the "farmed" corals from wild collected. The problem has snowballed in that you can't even tell what some of the original LE corals were supposed to be anymore. If you do a search for most "high end named" corals you will likely find 10 different corals that look somewhat similar but are all different...granted there are some "morphs" that take place in different tanks/conditions, but more often than not it's just someone mis-labeling something either by accident or on purpose to "make a buck".

I have enough trouble trying to find accurate scientific ID's let alone trying to pin down some "in vogue" cleaver name. Unless I know for sure what I'm dealing with I generally just say it's an unknown species within a particular genus. Were my own business is concerned I haven't found that any of that cleaver marketing makes a lot of difference. My approach when buying or selling has always been to just buy/sell what I like and not worry about what it's called or is currently "hot".

I agree with the theory...however the "names" are being applied to so many items these days that never originated from those guys it's hard to tell what's really from that lineage and what's just marketing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not off the deep end in some online rage. I understand that people got businesses to run & have to make money. I mean I got kids to feed too.

I'm just thinking like Matt and some of the others have said, give us a scientific name or a little detail into what I'm buying. I have been doing this long enough that I have curbed the impulse buys (lately) and research what I'm getting into. I cant speak for everyone though, and that is the percentage that concerns me. Cause as we all know this isnt the cheapest of hobbies, now add in a couple slick vendors and it can hurt some peoples desire.

I do agree with what you were saying about like Tyree, Fox and some of the others. They are imo experts and deserve to have thier name with thier corals. It shows the uniqueness of what they bring to us.

Now I will credit the sponors here that I have dealt with. While not everyone lists the sexy details like say LA, the ones I have contacted always answered specific coral and livestock questions I have had.
