Over Filtering?

    Is there such a thing as over filtering your tank? My questions stems from the fact that I will be setting up my 75G FOWLR tank and I have purchased a Filastar XP2 cannister filter and I am wondering if it would be beneficial to add a Penguin 303 bio wheel also to the tank. I am also going to be purchasing the Excalibur HV-1 hang on Protein skimmer (I know, Remora).

    I think if you are aiming for an overly rich in nutrient lagoonal tank then it is possible as some protien skimmers can remove almost everything from the water column.
    It becomes undersirable hence you are "overfiltering".

    In your setup I would (IMO) say no. Once the fishes are in and you do feed them the filters will require maintenance work to properly run. You will filter to the max but not undesirably.

    Your response was "no" as is no I don't need the extra filter or no it would'nt hurt to add the extra filter

    I would say no to the filter wheel. I have heard mixed reviews about them. Your live rock and a skimmer should do the trick. As for the XP2 that is what I have too and I never have anything in it. Right now it is basically a power head.

    How big is your tank? Is the water quality good? Are you saying the XP2 is a good or bad filter?

    I your case there is no worry of over filtering. I personally wouldn't suggest the penguin for a number of reasons. There bio wheels have a tendency to stop turning and the media is expensive. I would go for a Aquaclear filter or a whisper. The Aquaclears are similar to a canister filter as you can put whatever you want in there.

    I like the XP2, I havent had any problems with it. I have a 55 gallon with about 70 lbs of LR, a sump with just a CPR SR2 skimmer in it. I have never had any troubles with my parameters. I did have bio balls in my sump I have since removed those. Once I removed them I saw a great decrease in algae. Back to the XP2 very easy to maintain and good if you ever need to run carbon or anything of that sort. Moves a lot of water too.
