Only drill it if it is not tempered. Why doesn't your overflow work right?

What type of over flow box do you have? i have used the same over flow box for over 20 years and have never had a problem with it.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have an Eshopps overflow, and the only time it gets air in the u-tube is when it's near the edge of the black overflow box. As long as I set it up so that the u-tube is in the center of the black overflow box, I get absolutely NO air in it. The water cascading through the teeth in the overflow causes enough splashing that you get airbubbles going into the u-tube (unless you have it centered, then the bubbles never make it into the u-tube).

    I hope that helps you.

I have herd of some having problems with air bubbles getting and accumulating in the u tube and losing the siphon, and from what i have read and herd most say it comes from to slow of a water flow not able to flush the air out. I have not ever had this problem with mine any air bubbles that gos in flushes right through but then my return pump pumps more than my overflow will handle and i have put a valve on my return pump to adjust the flow to match the overflow rate.

I had problems with my overflow box. I was always worried about the siphon breaking when I was away. I came back from a weekend vacation and it was hardly flowing. I said the heck with that and got a 90 gallon drilled tank.

Usually you see all of your evap in your sump and not display tank. Sounds like you have the OF box set up wrong. If you have the chance to drill the tank I would do it, a lot better in the long run.

I have never ever ever had any trouble with the good-old standard overflow box that has the u-tube(s).

When I've seen bubbles accumulating, it's been cause the flow rate is too slow for the particular size of overflow box. You should see all size bubbles travelling through the tubes like an interstate highway, never slowing down.

Either use fewer tubes (if you're using more than one), or increase the flow with a stronger water pump.

Of course this all assumes that you have a decently designed box.
