Im pretty new to sumps, Ive never had one on any of my tanks, so for my 60 gallon Im setting up I plan on getting it drilled and I would like to know how many gph I should aim for and then how do I know what size bulkheads and pipes to use to achieve the desired amout of flow. thanks in advance

Aim for 10 times your sump's volume. Go to Glass-Holes.com dope aquarium stuff and get the overflow that is closest in flow to your sump's volume. You will get a full kit including drill bit. Your return pump should return the water at 4 to 5 foot head at 10 times the sump's volume max. This keeps micro bubbles from getting to the DT once the skimmer is broken in and allows the skimmer to be most effective. It also helps keep noise down.

That will work, bigger is better in the case of a sump as long as you can fit it and the equipment in the stand. Build a bubble trap after the skimmer. This will keep the water level steady in the skimmer chamber and helps control bubbles even more.

so for a 20 or maybe try to find something closer to a 30 gallon that is only about 13 inches tall, should I go for the 300gph kit and a pump rated to 300gph

So you are gonna have it drilled. I went with Bean Animal for my 90 gallon. It should handle 2000gph easy. Has 3 x 1" holes. The return pump is gonna be MagDrive18 which should be pushing around 1300+gph with the headloss.

300gph is way too little for your set up. Generally speaking, its like this:
-Minimum (Fish only) :10 times of your DT volume = 600gph
    -LPS, Softies :15-20 times = 900~1200gph
    -SPS : 20 plus times = 1200+ gph

    I hope this helps, bro.

    So, go Bean Animal :devilish:

If you can find a 30 get it definitely and just get the stuff you were talking about. Remember the larger the return pump the more energy needed per gallon to move the water and the greater the heat generated.

Id go with this then.. Youd have one 1 1/2" hole.

BTW, I had (still do) this with my 29 gallon. The Glass-holes people have really great customer service. Ive bought from them twice and they shipped it really fast.
