I was brainstorming and was thinking of a way to make the fluval 305 canister filter and better filter for saltwater. What if I bought an overflow box, with a decent size. And attached it to the back wall of my 40gal breeder and put the intake in the overflow box? Mostly for skimming but also it could be used later if I drain it and drill the tank. Is it possible knowing that the convalescence doesn't really pump a hole lot of water?

Not sure what benefit you percieve from doing this?

putting the inlet of the Fluval in the DT or hooking the Fluval up to an overflow box
is more or less the same thing . all that changed is the location of the inlet

if your going to use the Fluval, inlet in the tank and outlet back into the tank, is best bet IMO, as its one less link in the chain and one less leak / overflow potential issue

what is in the Fluval at present?
is your current avatar an image of your present tank?
how much flow do you have in the tank aside from the Fluval?

as the Fluval may be surplus to requirments anyway
although as a place to locate, Carbon, Purigen, GFO etc etc (chemical media)
cannister filters can be very useful

Yeah that's my tank in the avatar only a couple days old. I was trying to achieve the skimming of the top water like overflows do. I currently have live/dry rock, purigen and carbon in the now.

A canister filter won't work correctly with a normal overflow box.

They do make surface skimmer adapters for filters that are quite a bit cheaper than overflow boxes.
