I'm hoping to set up a sump/refuge on my 70 gal reef tank and was wondering about the size/ flow rate of the overflow box. Is there a minimum number of times the tank should turn over in an hour with that set up or would the rate be determined by the return pump?

The pump is one thing but different overflows can handle different GPH. I DIY mine so i don't know much about store bought overflows. As for turn over, i tend to think that for a fuge to do its job it shouldn't have to high of a flow. Always depending on the size of the tank and fuge of coarse. I have a 20gal tank and a 10gal fuge, its getting about 250 - 300 GPH.

I am also in the planning stages of a sump and was wondering the same thing. Is there a magical GPH that I should shoot for on a 55 gal.

thanks for the info everyone. I am inclined to think anywhere from350 to 500 gph should be adequate. I saw a video on reefvideo's and like the idea of a benthic zone and hope to incorporate one into my setup as well. Again, thanks for the info.
