My HOB overflow is super loud, making gurgling and flushing noises. Anyone know how to quiet this down? It is super annoying. It is on a 55 gal with 20 gal sump. The overflow goes straight down a 1" pipe into the sump. My wife is about to kill me if I don't make this thing silent.:-[

Hello, what I found most important is that the return pump GPH must match the inflow GPH from the overflow. If the return is "ahead" a few GPH it causes the overflow to catch up and you get the toilet flushing sound at regular intervals. A "u" shape to the overflow going into the filter also helps to make up for the noise instead of using a straight pipe. What is the GPH of the overflow and what size return are you using? If the return pump is too much, many add a ball valve after the return to regulate flow.

Thanks for the tips! The overflow is supposed to be around 600 gph and the pump is rated for 1000 gph. I also already have a ball valve installed. Has anyone used a system like the one that is posted above? Might have to build one of those tomorrow to try it out.

easy fix for me was a piece of filter cloth over the pipe, just dont put too much and watch for overflow.

Stockman and Durso standpipes don't work for HOB overflows

you can add a second HOB overflow and increase the drainage, change pumps, or dial the current one back with the ball valve

You can also add an air valve on the drain pipe to expel the air that is getting trapped in the drain, which is what causes the gurgling sound. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the top of my drain elbow and fed a 1/4" tube through it and it got rid of 90% of the noise.

i added a stockman standpipe to my hob overflow and it made the overflow much quieter, it was so loud before i could literally hear it across the house.

I wasn't clear. If the reason for your gurgling is a mismatch of flow between your drainage and your return, you cannot add a stockman as that will slow down flow even more.
