How would you tell if you had a miss-match in drainage? I have dialed the ball valve back until the sump stabilized (water level not going up or down in display or sump). Sorry for the questions, but I am new to the whole sump thing, just set it up today.

I would ask what size tank and what size pump do you use in the sump to return the water to tank ? Sounds like to me you are over loading the HOP and drain pipe to sump

It is on a 55 gal with 20 gal sump. 1 inch pipe into and out of sump.
    Pump is rated for:
    Max. Height: 13 ft
    Flow Rate: 1340 gph

You have a huge mismatch in pump capacity and drain capacity. I have a 55 and a 20 long too and have an 800 gph rated overflow with a Rio 2100, with head height taken into account, I am getting about 450-500 gph out of it. I have a little noise, but it's not too bad. I placed a piece of styrofoam over the top of it and that helped. I also have a sponge filter in it.

I took the sponge off cause it was not letting the water fall fast enough and was holding waste film on top of the water.

Sooooo....I guess I gotta return this pump and get a smaller one. Anyone have any suggestions? And here I thought I was being smart by buying a bigger one and just dialing it back. :-/

not good to restrict your pump, you can run a tee off your return with a ball valve in it and run water back to the return pump but I would also match your overflow gph up with your pump gph as close as possible. I had alot of noise in mine at first and found out I didn't have enough water, added a little more water(not enough to overflow) and adjusted the height of the overflow in the tank and now all I hear is the gentle flow of water.

I had same problem, more coming into tank then what was able to return out equally. I tried for days to quiet it down, and ended up restricting one line feeding the DT just a little and placed small tubes down the returns to better vent the air...a few days of adjusting the tubes up or down and the sounds went away, but i think the main problem was to much input, 2 Quiet one 3000's and an HOB with dual 1" return.

I also learned that air bubbles entering the HOB caused the small aqua lifter to gurgle as well....adjusted the black screen to allow for less bubbles.

    good luck

The pipe on the overflow on a great day and designed from overflow to sump in a straight shot will not handle 600 GPH .. And that pump if its pushing 800gph I'd be totally surprised to say the least . All you want and need to move through that sump is 200 to 250 GPH tops .. Whats the brand name on the pump ? I can then tell you how much its pushing up to tank and then on the drains is there any fitting like ell's and 45's ? hydrostatic pressure applies to drain lines also just like with pumps .

Flow ratings from any hobby vendor can be rated at what they want to say it is , Its a totally unregulated market really .. See how long it takes your return output to tank from pump to fill a 8oz cup and do the mathe to dial it in to 225 GPH or so. Get a RIO 1700 or a Mag 5 somthing in that range for a pump

Thanks Tangster and everyone else. Karma to all! I think I have been dealt the number one lesson in the this hobby. You get what you pay for. It is a Odyssea 1000 water pump. It is also super loud, so I am going to bite the bullet and purchase a mag 5 pump. There are 3 90's on the return line to the DT. The drain to the sump is a strait line with a 45 at the sump. Would putting a couple of 90's on the drain line to the sump help or just be a waste of time? I love 3reef, I don't know where I would be without this site.
