    Hello.
I have an Eheim 1260 pump paired with a DIY pvc overflow with 3/4 piping. Right now, the pump is sucking in so much water that the overflow (I think cannot keep up). It might also be that the compartment that the pump is in is not getting enough water? I am not sure. I might just get a better overflow for 100 (600 gph) but wanted to confirm if this is the right thing to do! Please help! Really appreciate.

sounds like the overflow isnt supplying enough water. You can either get a better overflow OR recirc. the pump. Put a pipes off the pump with a T fitting and a ball valve directly after it. Run the outlet of the T back into the sump so that the pump doesnt get ruined with a bunch of head pressure from throttling it down.

Recirculating water back to the sump is very inefficient. You would be best to install a valve on the discharge side of the pump and throttle or restrict to output. This adds head to the pump which reduces both flow and watts or power consumed. Additional head on a centrifugal pump in no way harms it, in fact for most pumps it increases the efficiency. By recirculating water back to the sump you are still consuming much more power as power in a centrifugal pump is directly related to the work being performed. You will also find lower watts equals lower heat gain.

Try throttling it back slightly to see if the overflow keeps up. You may also try varying the amount of air you feed to the overflow so it gets a smoother flow, this is where the Durso, Stockman and gurgle buster standpipes come into play.

Or you can leave the pump as is and use the same T principle and run a carb or phosban reactor off of it. :)
