I hope someone can shine some light for me. I built my own refugium for a 90gal reef. The return pump is a Rio 2500. But I think my over flow is to small. I would like to know how many gal per hour should be moved for a 90 gal reef?

*I also included a picture to show size of overflow.*

Hi christopherlp, as I was reading, you shoul to move your water about 10 times, so if you follow this rule, your pump needs to move 900gl/hr

The Rio 2500 only moves about 800GPH. You also have to consider loss of GPH due to the routing and distance of your plumbing, and how high up the water is being pushed to your display tank (DT).

What kind of overflow do you have?? I don't see a picture..

Also, I would recommend a Ball Valve or Gate Valve in-line on the plumbing to your DT so you can control the amount of flow if you don't have one..

BTW, what makes you think your overflow is too small in the first place.
Are you having any problems with the setup right now??

There isn't a mandatory amount of circulation you need to have. You are going to get a million different answers on "how much flow I should have."

Your return flow is fine. By the book is 10x, but I run mine around 7x. 5x is actually acceptable as well. It gives the water time to get skimmed before flying back into the tank. I run a Rio 2100 with my 90. You are fine as is. And 5 to 7x flow is for a sump. With a fuge I would dial it down even further, maybe 2x through the sump max using an offset fuge with proper plumbing.
