    setup

I have a 55gal tank with a 20L gal sump. The return pump is a RIO 2100 rated 692 (gph). The U tube is 1-1/4" and going to my sump is 1". My return is 3/4".

I already fixed the in tank part of my overflow. I went nuts with the jigsaw and the openings are much larger. :) Right now I have the pump going very slow and the waterline is above my in-tank overflow(3/16" over). I want to lower my water line by at least 3/8" and I want to throttle up my return.

I am a logic type of guy. Why must I have an additional U tube? Why can’t my setup, 1" out, handle more flow? Water Tension?

My plan was to do some dremeling of the input to the 1" overflow tube. Make the strainer holes larger. Does this sound good?

I do not want to drill anymore holes in my hood. I do not know...I guess I could?

    Thanks,
    Zak

Instead of putting an external OF on the tank why don't you just drill the tank and make an OF box and run a Durso Standpipes

IMO, if you can, drill the tank as suggusted. I had a 45 gal tank with the same over flow box with a rio 2500 and it worked just fine. well, thinking back, I did have a shut off valve closed just a little. Hope this helps, Luna

    Sooo

Raising the waterline or lowering inside overflow box does not work. Well it works but animals get in. :-/ My little snails.

So I have heard other options which I cannot use. (tank is full) I know cart before the horse. :) But what can I do now? I did not hear a "yes" or "no" whether dremeling out the strainer would help?

Why would I get more throughput if I have 2 U tubes?

Thanks for everyone's contributions. I am learning quite a bit.

    Thanks,
    Zak

What about installing 2 over flow boxes? I would really recommend drilling the holes and installing the quarter moon wall( for a side overflow) or the half box wall for the middle overflow. If all you have is water in the tank and nothing else, its better to do it now than later. I've had both overflows in my life and I can honestly tell you, that the OF boxes(like the one you have) suck. You have to be so careful not to over flow the tank. TRUST ME!

" WORDS OF WISDOM " your sump has to much water. Remember if the power fails, all the water up to the OF box will come down to the sump and over flow onto the floor.

    What?

Please explain "quarter moon wall( for a side overflow) or the half box wall for the middle overflow." ? It took me a weekend, two straight days to build the overflow I am currently using. So if I found another, better, means I would be very excited to destroy my overflow. This is not a joke. It ticked me off thus far. Destroying it would be good. :) Anyway...back on track.

I am kinda willing to try something else but I do not want to destroy my hood, some cutting can be done. I cannot cut a hole in my tank. As you can see by my pictures. It is in use. So...What is this overflow you are talking about?

    Thanks,
    Zak

    power out

I have my return setup so when the power goes out my sump does not overflow. Thank goodness I tested it last night. Today I came home from work and I popped a fuse sometime during the day?!. AND... no overflow, no water on the floor..;D
