Not really. There's nothing inherently unreliable about a U tube overflow. Weirs, on the other hand...

Also, I think this is a drilled overflow. He ignored my post, but if I drew it right, it's a drilled box. It's just not full tank height, with the bulkhead on the back panel.

Can't say I can fully visualize the scenario. What I do know is that if the water level in the tank doesn't reach the top (teeth?) of the overflow box, then there's not enough water in the system. I'm assuming that you have confirmed the return pump is operating as designed.

    Sorry. .. little confused here.

Ah, RS came up with another good point. The return line has to have its output higher than the teeth of the overflow, otherwise it'll drain down to that point. I still have no idea what your system is like, though, since there's no pics, and no explanation that I can follow.

sorry for all the confusion but i went to homedepot and fixed the problem. i did what blackraven said and put a gasket between the box and the tank i also put one between the tank and the outside of the bulkhead (by the way sorry blackraven i wasnt ignoring you im just really busy working on the tank and didnt see your post thanks though). but the return plumbing is not drilled so its over the top (not gonna drain back down) and theres an anti siphon hole too.
again sorry for the confusion, thanks for the help and blackraven for the solution.
