Well, I have found that I can't drill my fish tank because I don't know if the glass is tempered or not, and I don't know the manufacturer of the tank (second hand). I don't want to take the chance and have the glass crack/break/shatter. So, I am wondering if anyone knows a good overflow and return pump (I need the pump to be extremely quit. Even if it costs a lot of money.) I have a 40 gallon, so preferably 300 gph.

Heck why not go bigger? you can buy and overflow rated at 500 to 600gph
and a 700 to 900gph return pump for under $200.00

I guess bigger is better when it comes to filtration!

always keep in mind that you won't be depending on your return for the water circulation,
you can always add power heads for that!

I have an overflow rated at about 600GPH. I am running a Rio 2100 as my return pump which has a rating of about 400GPH at 4ft. I am happy with this set up. And my tank is 75g.

You could probably run a good sized overflow with one J tube and a Mag 9 return with a ball valve. That would be a decent setup IMO. So with about 600 going down to the sump and about 600GPH (out of 900) I am guessing at four feet, I think you should be fine. Just try to match the input and output close. If your return gives you more GPH than your overflow, you are looking at just that, an overflow. Don't get this sort of stuff at the LFS. It will cost you over $100 for the set up (just the overflow). You can get it online cheaper.

It is a little aggressive for a 40g tank, but as was stated before, it counts toward circulation.

On my 38 gallon tank I have an Eshopps overflow that I paid $37.49 dollars for. It's rated at 300 gph. My return pump is a Quietone 1200 (max rating of 296 gph but more like 150 gph in my set-up) that I paid $19.89 for and it's VERY quiet. Both were purchased at DrsFosterSmith.com. The flow's probably a little slow for a sump (I run a sump/fuge combo so I want the slightly slower flow), so I'd recommend either a Mag 3 (typically $50 at several online stores) or a Quietone 2200 (typically $40). The Mag 3 will give around 230 gph flow and the Quietone 2200 about 340 gph at 5 feet of head (head height is about 3.5 feet, add a couple of elbows and it's the equivalent of about 5 feet).
