And you are a lucky one if you snagged a specimen that eats prepared foods. Pods will just be icing on the cake. I will be watching with interest your pod production techniques. My wife doesn't know it yet, but I am going to dedicate part of my man room (garage) to just such an endeavor.

great score Jason, if hes allready eaten prepared foods thats one huge hurdle over the journey to recovery. few questions, what do you plan on feeding your pods, and i think you owe us a couple pics of the Bucket O Pods(R) ;D (and yes that is a registered trademark, we'll talk later bout that;)) wish you the best of luck buddy, good to here you rescued him and he's getting better!

Well, its an interesting thing with the prepared foods. I did A LOT of research last night (I was up till 3am), and was going over the notes and experiences of others who had Mandarins that would take prepared foods as well. About half of them still ended up starving. I think a lot of it comes from the little thats known about the actual nutritional value of live pods, compared to replicating that nutrition with prepared foods. Mixed that in with the very high metabolism of a mandarin, and its constant need for feeding constantly throughout the day, and many still don't make it. Which is why I am putting in the extra effort to propagate a steady supply of pods in addition to whatever else it may munch on.

that sais alot but it still doesnt answer my questions :p

btw i heard of manderins taking 2 foods so far with somewhat longterm success, first and formost is Rods Reef foods, i have never heard one complaint except that guy who said it killed his tang b/c the pieces where too big, and another product called Reef Bugs, i would be leary as it is manufactured by the alltime great magician Mark Wiess.

If it's a rescue pack, you have nothing to lose.:) You also have the cards stacked in your direction. The fact that it is accepting prepared is a huge advantage.
However, most of my research indicates a "dragonette with a sunken belly" is in serious trouble.
I aquaculture my own amphipods and stock my tank periodically. My mandarin will also at mini brittlestars. I also have a pretty established fuge. But, my mandarin also shares the tank with a leopard wrasse that will eat toe-nail clippings;).
Looks like a nice fish, keep me/us up-dated. I've had mine almost 2 years and would/will be devistated when it's gone.
In regards to your filtration(fugewise): I would plan on up-grading to a refugium/sump style set-up........
Any questions on the amphipod farm let me know.

Interesting, it may be worthy of consideration. For whatever reason, I have never been a fan of flake/pellet/dried food. Not a single one has ever touched the water of my tank. I think a lot of it stems from some of the dangers of pellets, but really I don't have a reason for it.
