Hey guys so the more I stare at my tank filling the more I realize the oak finish looks like hell in my basement. I would like to paint it white to match the basement. Assuming this is the same as painting any kind of cabinet but does anyone have any pointers?

Well, since that looks like carpet in your basement, I would recommend painters tape and a lot of it (like the width of duct tape). Because it is a little too late to lift the stand and put down a tarp. OH my biggest tip, for the doors, so help me pay attention to your hinges! Nothing will IRK you more than not being able to open or close them well. Personally I would do a dark stain, make it stand out even more! Have the stand say BAM I AM A FISH TANK ADMIRE ME MERE MORTALS! But that comes from my little house having EVERYTHING being painted white and off-tope. -.- OH and of course Patience, Patience, Patience. Wood can be the most obnoxious thing ever when you paint it because some spots will absorb more paint than others, but still do one full side at a time.

EDIT: Oh and of course the silly thing, don't paint your tank :p

Disassemble the doors and hinges.Be sure to make a diagram and label and mark all hinges, screws, and doors. You will be thankfull at reassembly.Use masking tape/marker to mark them. You can use a high quality latex or acrylic primer.Always test the primer by applying a small ammount somewhere on the piece to see if it adheres. This can be brush and rolled. Use of a small Johnny roller/pan is ideal.(1/4-3/8 inch nap) Light even coat is all thats necessary.Remember you are not painting you are priming.Don't try to make it white with one coat.Just put it on evenly.Allow to dry.You can then add a second coat(reccomended) as the primer goes on thinner then paint therefore your brush strokes and areas of thicker/thinner coverage are not as drastic. Be sure to ventilate the area well!!!!Fresh carbon is a good idea if the tank is running.

After the primer has cured according to man. specs you can topcoat with an acrylic water resistant finish.I can give you links for the items if you need them.;)

    Vinny, sorry to hijack here.

Just wondering what you thought about me painting my stand frame with indoor/outdoor Latex white paint- I already did actually.

Not sure what you painted over but exterior latex should be o.k. as long as it adhered properly.;)
